Piercing Aftercare Guide

Proper aftercare is essential for a healthy healing process. Following these instructions can help minimize irritation, promote healing, and reduce the risk of complications.

Body Piercings

Cleaning Your Piercing

• Always wash your hands thoroughly with soap and water before touching your piercing.

• Do not touch, twist, rotate, or play with your jewelry unless you are cleaning the piercing.

• Clean your piercing twice daily using one of the following methods:

Option 1:Wash gently with an unscented antimicrobial soap while showering.

Option 2: Spray the piercing with sterile saline solution approximately 5–10 minutes before showering, then thoroughly rinse the area with warm water at the end of your shower.

During Healing

• Keep cosmetics, lotions, sunscreen, perfumes, and other skincare products away from the piercing.

• Avoid allowing shampoo, conditioner, body wash, and scented soaps to remain on the piercing. Rinse thoroughly after showering.

• Do not remove your starter jewelry during the healing period. Removing jewelry too soon can cause the piercing to close and may trap irritation or bacteria inside the piercing channel.

• Avoid sleeping directly on the piercing whenever possible.

• Wear clean, breathable clothing that will not rub or snag on the jewelry.

Avoid

• Swimming pools

• Hot tubs

• Lakes, rivers, and oceans

• Saunas and steam rooms

• Any communal body of water

Submerging a fresh piercing can expose it to bacteria and increase the risk of irritation or infection.

What Is Normal?

During the first days and weeks of healing, it is normal to experience:

• Mild swelling

• Redness

• Tenderness

• Minor bruising

• Clear or pale yellow discharge that dries into a crust around the jewelry

These are common signs of the body's natural healing process.

When to Seek Medical Attention

Contact a healthcare provider if you experience:

• Thick green or dark yellow discharge

• Red streaks extending away from the piercing

• Excessive swelling that worsens over time

• Significant heat around the piercing site

• Fever or flu-like symptoms

If you have concerns about healing, contact PIERCED. for a follow-up evaluation.

Oral Piercings

Cleaning Your Piercing

• Rinse with an alcohol-free mouthwash after eating, drinking anything other than water, smoking, or oral contact.

• Brush and floss regularly while being careful around your jewelry.

• Stay hydrated by drinking plenty of water throughout the day.

During Healing

• Expect swelling during the first several days.

• Sleeping with your head slightly elevated may help reduce swelling.

• Ice chips can provide temporary relief from swelling and discomfort.

• Continue to leave jewelry in place throughout the healing process.

Avoid

• Smoking or vaping during healing

• Excessive alcohol consumption

• Spicy foods

• Extremely hot foods or beverages

• Using straws

• Chewing on jewelry

These activities can increase irritation, prolong healing, and raise the risk of complications.

 What Is Normal?

• Mild to moderate swelling

• Temporary tenderness

• Increased saliva production

• Minor redness around the piercing

These symptoms typically improve as healing progresses.

When to Seek Medical Attention

Contact a healthcare provider if you experience:

• Severe or worsening swelling

• Difficulty breathing or swallowing

• Excessive bleeding

• Thick green or yellow discharge

• Fever or signs of systemic infection

If you are uncertain whether your piercing is healing properly, contact PIERCED. for guidance.
